Jeff with a one-liner

I felt the same way about Almost Famous dude. It just didn´t pull me in. Not even the music which was spectacular classic rock!

Lisa with an even shorter one-liner (that I took her up on)

If you get the chance, go see "Billy Elliot". It is phenomenal.

Adam makes an EXCELLENT point

I think the next move is for a SNL character's movie to coincide with their
first appearance on the show.

"Tim Meadows, I've got three words for you, 'Garret Morris'"
-Howard Stern

This is GREAT. Randy and I get into it! Here's Randy:

Best in show - (**) Disappointing. So many of the actors were ACTING
like funny characters instead of being them. The only person I really
bought was the rich, busty lady who owned the poodle, with all the make
up. The only other good performance was delivered by Catherine O'hara.

"Hey, I know, I'll make a movie with all my funny friends. They'll just
show up, we'll run the camera, fuck around a little bit, it'll be a riot!"

What happened to honest characters instead of one dimensional look
alikes? Have comedians forgotten about subtext and having a fucking
"want"?! It's the same problem I have with all of Jim Carrey's work -
phony - impressions - unbelievable - shallow. Watch " American Movie " a
REAL documentary with REAL people - funny as hell - WHY? BECAUSE IT'S
REAL. Reactions are subtle but boy are they there. It's fucking
riveting. If I wanted to watch shallow, supposed to be funny characters,
I'll watch SN fucking L!

Randy

To which I responded...

Well ranted.

But it's puzzling that you give a documentary as an example of the kind of "acting" you enjoy. Is there ANY comedic acting you find realistic? Gimme those examples. Jim Carrey is one thing, but he was attempting something far more challenging than what was presented to the cast of "Best in Show". And I gotta tell ya, "Show" was funnier than SN fucking L has been in a decade. These guys do funny characters and funny situations well, in my opinion. Just look at "A Night at the Roxbury" and "The Ladies Man" to see what you're referring to. There IS a difference between those movies. If you're looking for "Broadcast News", certainly "Best in Show" didn't shoot that high, and the actors didn't have that aim either. But it's funny...

...DAMMIT!!!

Counter-ranted,

Paul

ps - I had pathos for the Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy characters.

But Randy gets the last word -

Why were the Fred Willard scenes so funny - 'cause he was being so
wacky? Partly. What really sold those scenes was the other straight man
announcer who was being REAL. When Fred would deliver an uncouth double
ententre, the controlled horror of the other announcer is what was
funny. Right after Fred's line I shifted focus immediately to the
underplayed, "I can't believe this moron just said that and how do I
keep this thing going in a dignified manner" look of that other actor.

As I said the better characters I really enjoyed were the one's who were
more believable: Catherine O'hara and the lady who owned the poodle (
and of course the straight announcer ).

Okay, let's talk wacky - Barney Fife or Floyd the barber on The Andy
Griffith show. Do you ever doubt the sincerity of these characters
despite their over-the-top-ness?
